Comment: We arrived around 8 on a Friday night and had problems with our electric link up. Your night staff was extremely friendly and helpful and lent us a cable when we found out that was the problem. We really enjoyed our short time at your quiet and relaxing park and will be returning soon. Clair & Alan Barkley from  Doncaster

Comment: A beautiful, immaculately maintained caravan park Lovely Abbey ruins on the site , we recommend you go early in the morning(it opens at 10)before day visitors arrive and you will have it all to yourselves to explore. Peaceful and secluded location, especially so when the day visitors to the riverside leave, (this by 6pm.)
We were on a super site and was huge, lovely not to have water carriers to fill and waste water to empty. An adult only site but children are allowed as visitors so don’t expect to be totally free of the little darlings. The owners are very friendly and helpful (we had trouble changing a gas bottle and Alan could not have been more generous with his time and assistance).
Lovely walks along the river and the woods, lovely site for dog owners. Could not recommend this site more highly and we will definitely be back.

Comment: We were fortunate to stay on your lovely site for the nights of 8/9/10 of July. Booking in the name of Ellerington, however this will change to Thomas in September, thanks to the beautiful and romantic nature of the location. Once again, thank you and we hope to see you again in the near future. Regards Bryan.

A belated thank you to all concerned for the great annual summer site bash. It was enormous fun and enjoyed by all and the fact that so much money was raised for charity was a credit to you all.

Comment: Just a quick note to thank you for a lovely weekend stay and for rescuing us from the disaster that could have been the site adjacent to the A1!!  Once again, thank you - we hope to be back and book in advance this time into our little adopted spot, A4 by the oak tree.

Comment:  First time at this site and we thoroughly enjoyed out time there.
Adult only site.

Peace is in abundance until the hens or the peacock let 'rip', but that was just a laugh.

Off into Durham, had not been there for years. Plenty of good walks, woods and the river to follow, fishing on site. The Abbey is also on site hence the name.

Clean toilets and showers, very friendly staff, go back? you bet we will.

We even came away with a gift of six fresh eggs courtesy of the owners, wow beautiful yolks.

Comment:  We have just came back from spending another lovely weekend here, this is a lovely site, for a nice and relaxing break. We had a pitch next to the abbey ruins. The owners are really friendly and helpful the toilets and shower block are always clean with free hot water. The site is now adult only, great if you want a relaxing weekend we always go back. The gents toilets are nearly finished after being up graded, then they are starting on the ladies, in my book that means they are going to be better than they are now as they are great at the moment.

There are plenty of walks along the river Wear any time of year. There is a retail park about 5 minute drive away that has a Sainsbury, George, Next and other well known stores and Durham city is about 10 minutes drive away. There are plenty of dog walks. Be advised you do need transport unless you're really fit as there is a steep hill and a country lane walk to the nearest bus stop.

The staff are very friendly and welcoming. We paid £18.00 per night for a standard pitch which is only 6amp, you pay about £20.00 for a super pitch which has 16amp - you have to pay about £20.00 deposit for an adapter for this. You also have to pay £10.00 deposit for a barrier card which you use for the toilets and for exiting the site.

I would recommend this site. As we go nearly every weekend on a lovely evening there is nothing better than sat outside with a glass of wine looking at the scenery

Comment:  A lovely quiet site with spectacular views and a lovely abbey to look round. Staff very helpful and provided lots of information about the local area. It's well worth the trip in Durham to visit the Cathedral and Castle.

Comment:  Very pleasant 3 night stay at Finchale. Adult only site in beautiful location. Staff friendly without being overbearing.
Price of £22 per night for 2 adults, car, van & awning. 16 amp electric, waste & water supply. You could get cheaper, but electric at only 6 amp due to long-standing dispute with National Trust I believe. Would not recommend these though, as over 3 days, noted many frustrated caravanners trudging out to electric supply and re-setting 'trip-switch'!
Toilet blocks clean, but 'dated'. Shower & toilet cubicles extremely narrow and not suitable for 'wide' people like myself! Did not notice any disabled toilets / shower.
Sainsburys and other large stores within 5mt car ride, but do not be misled, Finchale is isolated in its own beauty beside the Abbey and River Wear.
Will definitely book again and would recommend the site for its efficiency, location and serenity.

Comment:  We visited the site over the Bank Holiday. What a lovely site. Very interesting. Everything that everyone else has said is basically correct. My view of the toilets and showers is very favourable. I have camped hundreds and hundreds of times and I consider myself quite fussy. These toilets are very good and very clean with hot showers whenever needed.

My partner and I decided to walk along the river Wear to Durham city, a lady who lived in one of the Statics said it was about half an hours walk. Sorry but it was five or 6 miles through sometimes rough terrain and it took us 2 quite fit 50 somethings 2 and a half hours. It was a really beautiful walk, well recommended. We didn't see a building until we practically reached the city. Fantastic and so was Finchale Abbey (pronounced Finkle).

Comment:  If you are looking for an adult only respite from the hustle and bustle this is the site . We visited this weekend the weather was a mixture of sunshine and rain so this hasn't clouded our judgement at all.
Security was excellent with a barrier system to get in and out, staff very friendly but not intrusive. Nothing at all to do on site, except admire the scenery and walking unless you are into fishing as the river Wear meanders around the park. We are not fishermen so am not sure about the permits etc.
You can visit the priory which is within the grounds of the park, this is owned by English Heritage and the cost was about £3.50 I think, but to be honest when you are on site you can see pretty much of it anyway.
The pitches are a mix of level and sloping, we were lucky to be on a level pitch.
There is a shop of sorts on the site but it consists of a hole in the wall which serves as a cafe/takeaway and isn't really to be relied upon, we used it to buy milk but I think it was more luck than judgement that there was any for us. The supermarket is a short drive away along with a retail park and a maccie d's if you get desperate !
The only minor criticism was the showers - this has been mentioned before, they are very clean but they are also old fashioned and very small, you get an allotted measure of hot water and have to press a button which is inside a hole in the wall to get another measure. The water pressure also leaves a bit to be desired, and even at this time of year they were quite chilly wouldn't fancy it in the colder months! That said the toilets were always clean and there was always plenty of hand soap and toilet roll available.
A place we will definitely return to it was just what we were looking for a perfect haven of peace and tranquillity.

Comment: Just recently visited Finchale abbey in our caravan nice site, lovely views. Good access to Durham and surrounding areas. Good pub and food about a mile away advise taking car good 45min walk, supermarket near pub .Only downside to site is the toilet block, with it being December on our visit the blocks were not warm enough and even though showers were hot they were a bit out of the ark in need of a upgrade, also too dark. We contacted the site on this and was told they were going to try and make improvements in the new year. But nice find very peaceful.

Comment:  We left your site on 18th July 2008 after a fantastic fortnight of peace, tranquility and friendship, have never been on a site before and met so many friendly people. We would love to have stayed, but all our family live in Kent 320 miles away, love the idea of the lodges and a wonderful site to spend your days. Many thanks for a great two weeks look forward to coming again. All the best.

Comment: : In the grounds of old abbey with peacocks ducks and what looked like turkeys roaming freely gave this beautiful surroundings although the peacock was a bit noisy it added atmosphere to this very peaceful area brilliant walks over the bridge from the abbey for man and dog alike into durham where the choice of eating was excellent. Durham cathedral, castle and surrounding where breathtaking and serene, the rowing on the river watching the days traffic of people, students, children enjoying a stroll with every step and different routes showing off the castle in its majestic splendour. phew how could you end the day other than with friendly conversation and peaceful relaxing surroundings.

Lovely clean and well decorated toilets and was facilities (We aim going again next year) The site is mainly sloping but didn't cause any problems. Well done- you have made it. We came for a couple of nights and stayed for more than a week! A super site set in beautiful surroundings. Enjoy your holiday - we have enjoyed ours, and will return. P.S. Make an effort to walk to Durham along the Wearside Way - it's great!

Let's do Durham this year! Look a camping site is signposted at the roundabout, lets go and have a look! Where on earth is the road leading us, a prison the end of the world... Finchale Priory Camping Park, gorgeous place! What better place to start our holiday!
